Steel quantity takeoff for tenders
Pricing a steel package against the clock? Send the tender drawings or the model and get back steel weight by profile, bolt counts, paint areas and a cutting plan, with every number traceable to a member in the model.
Example situation · Contractors
← All situationsA builder is pricing a design-and-construct tender for a warehouse with offices. Steel is the largest single item, the tender closes soon, and the drawings change twice during the tender period.
An example situation. The workflow and the projects linked below are real.- Tender drawings (PDF or DWG) or an IFC model
- The scope: what is in your package and what is not
- Your stock lengths and supplier sections, if you want a cutting plan
- Steel weight by profile and grade, measured from a 3D model
- Plate, bolt and anchor counts
- Paint surface area per member
- A cutting plan against your stock lengths, with offcuts
- A list of what the drawings don't define, so you can price the risk
- Updated quantities when the drawings change, with the difference by profile
How it goes
Four steps, all by e-mail.
Model
The tender drawings become a 3D model. Anything the drawings don't define is listed, not guessed.
Measure
Quantities come from the model: weight per profile, plates, bolts, paint area.
Plan
A cutting plan against your stock lengths, with a splice only where it saves a whole bar.
Revise
When the drawings change, the model changes and the quantities are measured again, with the difference shown.
Experience
Good to know
- Model weight covers what is drawn. Connections that aren't designed yet are an allowance, and the takeoff states what is in and what isn't.
- On a design-and-construct tender the member sizes may need checking first. That is the analysis service, and it can run on the same model.
- Already have an IFC file? The free IFC Steel Viewer gives you a takeoff in your browser, without sending the file anywhere.
- Codes. Eurocode, AISC 360 or the code your project requires. Tell me which at the start.
- Sign-off. Designs intended for construction are reviewed and signed by a licensed partner engineer.
- Scope and price. Every request gets a written scope and price before any work starts. No job is too small.

FAQ
Questions
How accurate is a model-based takeoff?
As accurate as the drawings it comes from. Every number is traceable to a member, so you can open the model and check any line of the list.
Can you apply our rates?
Yes. Send your supplier's price list and the quantities come back priced, profile by profile.
Can I do the takeoff myself?
If you have an IFC model, yes: the free IFC Steel Viewer does it in your browser. Send the job when you only have drawings, or when you need a cutting plan and a check of what the drawings leave undefined.
Is this your situation?
Send what you have and a few lines about what you need. The e-mail opens with a short checklist so nothing important is missed.
